Brainwave Entrainment – Binaural Beats, Monaural Beats, and Isochronic Tones

The Three Types of Brainwave Entrainment

Brainwave entrainment is becoming one of the fastest growing tools for improving lives and allowing people to reach altered states almost instantly. There are three forms of brainwave entrainment: binaural beats, monaural beats, and isochronic tones. Each works in a different way for entraining the brain and all three have been scientifically proven to work.

What is Brainwave Entrainment

Everything we experience is based on our brainwave frequencies. When we are energetic, productive, lazy, happy, sad, sleeping, dreaming, meditating, or whatever we feel, our brainwaves are at a specific frequency. They determine our entire state of mind. Brainwave entrainment are tools that change your brainwave frequencies to reach your desired state of mind.

Binaural beats, monaural beats, and isochronic tones each have their own benefits and disadvantages to entraining the brain. By knowing how each one works you can decide which one is best for you.

Binaural Beats

Binaural beats are the most popular form of brainwave entrainment. They have been around the longest and there is a much wider selection of these recordings to choose from. They entrain the brain by playing two separate frequencies in each ear. Say 450Hz is played in your left ear and 454Hz is played in your right. The brain works by compensating for the difference creating a brainwave frequency of 4Hz. In order for them to work properly you must wear head phones.

Advantages:

Capable of entraining any desired frequency
Wide selection of recordings to choose from
Most scientifically proven and researched
Can add soothing background noise without compromising effectiveness
Whole brain functioning

Disadvantages:

Must be high quality recordings to work properly
Mandatory use of headphones
Can sometimes take longer to entrain brainwaves

Monaural Beats

Monaural beats work by playing the two separate frequencies in each channel or speaker. The two frequencies in each channel combine creating a third frequency that our mind is able to entrain to. It’s an interference pattern that produces the desired frequency outside of your head.

Advantages:

Does not require headphones

Disadvantages:

Cannot entrain frequencies under 4Hz
Must have no background noise to work properly
Limited selection of products

Isochronic Tones

Isochronic tones turn on and off single spaced tones in a synchronized pattern, increasing the pulse speed, and entraining your brain with the rhythm.

Advantages:

Do not require headphones
Can entrain the brain quicker
Can entrain one side of the brain at a time

Disadvantages:

The sounds can be annoying
No background noise can be added
Cannot entrain frequencies under 4Hz
Limited selection of products
Can be more costly for recordings

The fact that monaural beats and isochronic tones cannot entrain the brain under 4Hz limits their ability. This is the main reason you won’t find that many recordings. But if you hate wearing headphones then certain recordings can work great for entraining your brain.

In order to understand how each one one works it’s best to try all three and decide for yourself. Personally, I prefer binaural beats anytime over monaural beats or isochronic tones but it depends on your personal preference and the type of effect you want to produce.

Why Add Accompanying Sounds to Binaural Beats?

Binaural beats can be used to enhance the meditation and relaxation process. When you listen to these beats on stereo headphones, they can alter your brain frequencies in beneficial ways, a process known as brainwave entrainment.

A beat is delivered to one ear and a beat of a slightly different frequency is delivered to the other. The overall effect is to lower the primary brainwave frequency. Once you achieve lower frequencies, it becomes possible to have more powerful meditations and even out of body experiences.

Brainwave entrainment binaural beats work best when combined with a soothing, sometimes musical sound. These include sounds like rolling waves, bell chimes, and calming rainfall.

It’s good to combine sounds with binaural beats because music connects to the individual at an emotional level. By incorporating emotions into the brainwave entrainment process, you get better, more personal results.

You need to know that the volumes and frequencies of the beats and sounds need to be properly balanced. You can’t just put a beat together with music and expect your brainwave frequencies to be altered. The beats and sounds cannot interfere with one another or the process will not work. This is why it is important to get your binaural beats from a professional who knows what they are doing. Some people create their own beats, but these are not as effective.

You can receive so many positive benefits from using brainwave entrainment binaural beats. You can enhance your memory, deepen the meditation process, lower your anxiety levels, become more relaxed, use them as a sleep aid, and much, much more!

A Short Introduction to Brainwave Entrainment and Binaural Beats

Binaural beats is a form of brainwave entrainment where you listen to two slightly different frequencies of sound in the left ear and the right ear. The brain processes these two similar frequencies and creates a third warbling beat, as if the two frequencies have merged into one resonating sound within your brain.

Known as the “frequency following” response, this phenomenon was discovered in 1839 by Prussian physicist Heinrich Wilhelm Dove.

The superior olivary nucleus, a part of the brain stem is the centre of the brain mainly responsible for this. This region of the brain is responsible for perceiving three-dimensional sounds in the environment and their motion through space.

The  ‘phantom tone’ that is generated can render you into an altered state. Many people use binaural beats as a tool eg. to enhance concentration, relax, induce trance, produce deep meditative states,  sleep, for lucid dreaming, and as a platform for out of body experiences/’astral projection‘.

There are common frequencies occurring in the brain with different effects on the mind. It is important to note here that this is general rule and does not apply to everyone. For example, people with a mental illness, such as schizophrenia, have abnormally pervasive delta waves during the waking state.

> 40 Hz – Gamma waves…Higher mental activity, problem solving, perception, fear/anxiety

13-40 Hz – Beta waves… Eyes open, busy, active or anxious thinking and active concentration, cognition, arousal

7-13 Hz – Alpha waves…Eyes closed, relaxation (while awake), drowsiness, meditative states, borderline-sleep and pre-wake, lucid dreaming

4-7 Hz – Theta waves… Deep meditation, Dreaming,  Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep

Data from an EEG would reveal the predominant frequencies in the brain not subjected to binaural beats in normal waking state to be in the 13-30Hz range (beta waves). The right and left hemispheres would not be synchronized so one side may have more or less than the other.

Of course beta waves would not be the only waves in the brain, simply the most dominant as there are varying volumes of other waves including a few delta, some alpha, some theta, as well as gamma in our waking state.

But the dominant waves (in this case the beta waves) will have the most influence overall on your mental state over any other; just like music played would lessen the perception of a conversation, so would the predominant waves in your brain ‘drown out’ the other frequencies to some degree.

Of course if you were in REM or a deep sleep, the reverse would occur, as 1-7Hz take predominance (delta and theta waves) and the higher frequencies become less and less prominent with beta/gamma waves becoming more or less absent. The right and left hemispheres of the brain would be uneven, just like in the beta wave example.

Think of the unsynchronized brainwave model as an abacus, each bead representing a quantity of a wave, each rack of wood signifying a wave from gammas all the way down to the deltas.

In a constant state of flux, the beads are being pushed back and forth, unevenly distributed to the left and right sides. The synchronized brain, in contrast, would be mostly even in the quantity of waves on either side of the right and  left hemispheres and for the average person would be dominated by beta/alpha waves in an alert waking state.

Synchronizing both hemispheres enable them to function synergistically rather than one dominating the other; thereby cutting the power struggle and increasing the efficiency of the brain. Binaural beats aren’t the only way of achieving synchronicity between hemispheres, in fact you can achieve the same results with rhythmic sounds such as drum beats or music. However, you will not be able to program which frequency your brain would follow.

Meditate Easily with Brainwave Entrainment and Binaural Beats

For centuries, many people have tried to achieve higher levels of consciousness through meditation. Today. it is possible to  meditate more effectively with soothing music embedded with brainwave entrainment and binaural beat mp3s.  Meditation on a regular basis with binaural beats can now be accomplished more  easily using less time  compared to more traditional methods of meditation.

From a scientific standpoint, meditation does alter your brainwave patterns.  During our daily activities the brain is functioning at a high level of  brainwave patterns. When we are always at this high level of brainwave activity,  we never have the opportunity to rest and recharge. Meditation can lower brainwave  patterns to a restful level.

You need a lot of time to practice and learn how to do many types of meditation properly. Using brainwave entrainment and binaural beat mp3s can slash the time necessary to reach a  meditative state, sometimes in as little as 10-15 minutes. You will also be able  to achieve the more concentrated delta and theta states faster and without  distractions.

Today’s brainwave entrainment technology uses methods of embedding  binaural beats in new age music, pleasant ambient sounds, and soothing nature  sounds. This produces a meditative state which can stimulate a person on  mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual levels.

All you need to do is download meditation music with binaural beats embedded  and plug in your stereo headphones. At the same time, you should cut down all  external noises and all negative thoughts. You will need to focus on the  objective of relaxation and allow yourself to drift downwards into lower  brainwave levels to reach a soothing meditative state. Practice listening  to relaxation music embedded with binaural beats on a daily basis and it will  become easier to reach meditative states and in a fraction of the time of other  methods.

It can be can be dull and boring to listen to binaural beats mp3s without some kind of soothing background  music. As everyone has different tastes in music, it is a  matter of personal preference. If we listen to music that we prefer, it is much easier for the binaural beats to do their job in reducing  brainwave activity and helping us achieve much more concentrated and relaxing  meditative states.

Listening to Brainwave Entrainment with Music

You can experience inner healing and freedom through listening to  isochronic tones , binaural beats and monaural beats mixed in with soothing slow tempo ambient music, nature sounds, bells and chimes and so on. It is music for healing the body, mind and emotions, and also for freeing ones soul from the confines of three dimensional existence. The emphasis is not so much on lyrics and style as it is on experiencing the benefits from the background tones and frequencies which are embedded in the music. Different frequencies have been proven to heal emotions, enhance brain power, and, in some cases, free ones spirit to sore into altered states of consciousness.

To understand how isochronic tones, binaural beats and monaural beats can improve your overall well-being at a physical, mental, emotional and spiritual level a basic understanding of the electrochemical functions of the brain is necessary. Our brain is made up of billions of brain cells or neurons which use electricity to communicate with one another. The combination of millions of neurons sending signals all at the same time produces an enormous amount of electrical activity in the brain. This activity can be detected and mapped using EEG devices. Such mapping shows that the brain is emitting specific frequency brainwave patterns that relate directly to different mental processes all the way from wide awake and highly focused (beta) to deep, dreamless sleep (delta).

Following are the 4 most common brainwave classifications as revealed by EEG devices. The brain is a dynamic, living organ. During these dominant patterns, other frequencies still exist and there is no exact, single frequency that our brain operates on.

Frequency range Name Usually associated with:

13 to 40 Hz Beta waves Active, busy or anxious thinking and active concentration. Throughout the day our brains are in the beta range. At this level we are active, busy, and all our emotional responses are at this level whether we are depressed, irritable, angry, happy, glad, full of energy etc.

7 to 13 Hz Alpha waves When we begin to relax or begin to get drowsy, but are still awake and conscious (maybe at pre-sleep) we are said to be at the alpha level.

4 to 7 Hz Theta waves Dreams, deep meditation, hypnosis

Defining Binaural Beats, Monaural Betas, and Isochronic Beats

Binaural Beats – Binaural beats require headphones if you want to see results. Binaural Beats work by broadcasting two separate frequencies in each ear. For example, if you want to tune your brain to a 7 Hz frequency, you could play 200 Hz in your right ear, and 207 Hz in your left ear. The brain will compensate for the difference between the two and produce a third tone that will be exactly 7 Hz. This will result in your brain frequency being lowered to the theta level of 7 Hz.

Monaural Beats – Monaural beats are the opposite of binaural beats because the input is the same in each ear therefore you don’t need headphones but good speakers are always a plus. In the case of monaural beats the sound is the same on each side whether you use headphones or speakers, but the volume must be tuned precisely (not too loud and not too low) for the beats to be effective.

Isochronic Tones – These are sharper sounding than monaural beats thus they are more powerful in their effect on the brain and are believed to be the most effective of the three.

Binaural beats, monaural beats and isochronic tones by themselves are not very pleasant to listen to. This obstacle is overcome by embedding these beats/tones into soothing ambient music, nature sounds, the sounds of bells or chimes and so on.

Is Most Brainwave Entrainment Music Dull And Monotonous?

One thing you will notice right away about most brainwave music is it’s usually made up of slow tempo ambient music, or new age meditation music, and sometimes classical orchestra music. And it is sometimes embedded with background noises such as static noises (white noise, brown noise, pink noise), or with nature sounds like that of birds, waves/ocean, rain, wind, thunderstorms, and also bells, chimes, flutes, and so on. In every case the important part of the music is the background beats (whether binaural beats, monaural beats, or isochronic beats) which need to be perceived by the brain throughout the recording otherwise it will be ineffective. All the other added stuff (ambient music, nature sounds, bells, chimes etc.) is only for the sake of making the background beats pleasant to listen too. If the music is very fast pace, such as in rock or pop music, or too loud the background binaural, monaural or isochronic beats are drowned out and not effective in entraining the brain.

As for brainwave music being dull and monotonous it depends upon your mental state when listening to the music. When your mind is in a hurry and in a distracted, scattered condition more than likely brainwave music will seem very boring and monotonous, long and drawn-out. But if you get over these “withdrawal symptoms” of your day to day frenzied mindset your brain will start to adjust to the new audio energy and in time it will become relaxing, as well as something to look forward to listen to each day.

Furthermore, when listening to some brainwave recordings for the first time some people may not only feel uncomfortable, but may even experience temporary headaches or tearing eyes. This is normal and not a danger. Some people are always very tensed-up and rarely ever experience a relaxed mental state. As a result they may feel some slight discomfort such as headaches when they physically relax and “let go”. It’s this sudden release and relief that causes a slight headache or tearing. These side-effects are only temporary and usually go away the next time you listen to brainwave entrainment recordings because your brain builds new neural pathways to accommodate the new incoming brainwave audio energy. For most other people, once your brain waves slow down to Alpha, you’ll naturally feel very relaxed and peaceful, deep down inside.

Ultimately, depending upon the musical tastes of each individual, one type of music may affect one person in one way, and affect another person in a different way. What may free one person mentally and emotionally, may depress someone else, or be completely meaningless and boring to another. While some music may free one person to the point of giving them an out of body experience, and/or to the point of enhancing their dreams at night and making them more lucid, and also transforming them into a more loving, gentle person; to another person certain music/beats may serve to stir up subconscious “junk” and previous bad memories which need to be dealt with and healed. Everyone’s brain is wired differently so it is unpredictable exactly how certain music, sounds, beats or frequencies will affect each individual. Some may be led to astral heights after listening to just one recording. Whereas for another person listening to the same recording, nothing may happen until after they listen to the same recording for 25 minutes to an hour a day for a few weeks. It comes down to being patient, prepared and receptive in consciousness, not in a hurry, not in a rush, but in a relaxed, receptive, humble frame of heart and mind.

Long-term Effectiveness Of Brainwave Entrainment Recordings

After several months of regular daily use of the same brainwave recording your mind gets accustomed to the stimuli and it becomes 2nd nature, giving the impression that the recording doesn’t work anymore. The reason is your mind is strengthened in once neglected areas as new neural pathways are created and adjusted to the recording. Working your mind with brainwave recordings is similar to working your muscles. After a time a certain muscle, for example, no longer seems to be receiving any benefit from the same exercise which initially seemed very effective. The reason is the exercise served its purpose in bringing the muscle to its present much more healthy condition. The only way to add additional benefit to that muscle is to change the exercise around a little. This will produce long-term benefits. Likewise your mind gets stronger with time as you listen to brainwave recordings, but it reaches a point where a particular recording which once seemed so effective appears to be doing nothing anymore. However, if the recording is changed around a little it will produce additional, long-term results. And just as having a variety in your exercise routine, and even a variety in your diet, is better for your body. So likewise you will receive long-term benefit, and a more balanced mind, by listening to a variety of brainwave entrainment recordings

For this reason some companies sell several CD recordings contained in one program with specific instructions on when to listen to certain recordings, and for how long, before switching to the next level of recordings. They do it this way so you receive the optimal benefits the recordings offer. And just as it is not a good idea to stuff yourself with a variety of different foods at once, or to exercise too much all at once, so likewise it is good to start with one level of brainwave recordings, giving your mind time to adjust to that recording before moving to the next level.

The Benefits of Brainwave Entrainment

Meditation has been proven to bring about many benefits to its practitioner. But the state of relaxation that meditation can bring is far harder to achieve as it will eat up your time and can be boring, annoying and even frustrating at times.

Thankfully, brainwave entrainment can help people who have a hard time to meditate to still reap its benefits. Also known as brainwave synchronization, this process trains the brain to reach peak performance on-demand, to relax or to lower brainwaves by using audio CD or MP3 music which will put you in a meditation-like state. Brain wave entrainment uses isochronic tones, binaural beats or monaural beats  to make the process possible.

Binaural beats on the other hand, work by combining two different frequencies into the ears to achieve a frequency – the difference between those frequencies – that will determine as to which brain state will be achieved, the brain will naturally ‘entrain’ or follow that frequency. Brain wave types are as follows: beta brainwaves, alpha brainwaves, theta brainwaves and delta brainwaves.

There are different binaural beat CDs which will allow a person to enter a state of mind easily minus the hassles that meditation may bring. For instance, an insomniac person can easily buy a binaural beats sleep induction mp3 sound to help him have a good night sleep. Additionally, in this fast-paced world we live in, brainwave entrainment CDs can actually help a person to sleep and feel well rested the day after, listening to the CD in a Delta will increase melatonin naturally and induce deep sleep which triggers growth and body healing.

Another benefit that one can get from brainwave entrainment is that a person will have a more relaxed and peaceful state of living. Using brainwave entrainment music, a person may feel much better after dealing with the struggles in life and face it head on. This is especially true for people who are leading a stressful life.

Aside from that, it can help a person to live a happier and more fulfilling life. According to studies, it will release neurotransmitters/endorphins, serotonin ‘happy chemicals’ and mood hormones which will help you go from sad to glad just by popping it on a CD player or an MP3 player. It can be used as a stress relief, to overcome depression naturally without dangerous prescription drugs or medication, and also helps in alleviating migraine as well as anxiety, fear, anger, self-sabotage and other negative feelings. Some even said that they had a happier and more fulfilling sex life after undergoing entrainment.

Lastly, meditating with brainwave entrainment in the alpha state will help anybody to have better focus on their job and get things done in a timely and correct manner. Aside from that, other mental faculties like increasing the IQ, creativity, super learning, reasoning, concentration, critical thinking and spiritual awakening will dramatically improve.

You will more easily access your deepest capacities and abilities whenever you need them, you just have to relax your mind and you will see all the solutions to your problems. Truly, by learning how to train your brain, you no longer have to do conventional meditation for hours and hours, you listen to the digital music and within just minutes you will access different levels of consciousness.
